Starting in 2024, visitors to Amsterdam will be required to pay a daily tax, which will be determined based on factors such as the duration of their stay and the type of accommodation they choose. The new tax rate for overnight visitors may be as high as 12.5%, up substantially from the former 7%.

The tax aims to address the challenges associated with the influx of visitors by generating additional revenue to support the maintenance and enhancement of Amsterdam's cultural and historical heritage, as well as investments in public spaces and amenities.  

The introduction of the tourist tax reflects Amsterdam's commitment to balancing the benefits of tourism with the need to protect its unique character and manage the impact on the local community. 

Across Europe, there has been a notable increase in tourism since 2020, prompting other cities such as Venice and Barcelona to institute comparable measures for maintaining cleanliness and managing tourism flow. By no means is this tax meant to discourage travelers to Amsterdam. By encouraging responsible tourism, the city aims to create a more sustainable and enjoyable environment for both visitors and residents.
